"I deserve a drink" lies

“I need a drink”

Ever think that thought?

Or maybe it’s cousin…

“I deserve a drink.”

When they first come to me many of my clients think these thoughts.

It seems so innocent and justified.

Especially if you’ve had a tough day.

On your feet or making millions of decisions.

You know you want to stop drinking so much, but it really was a tough day.

You’ll have just the one.

Hopefully.

Except that isn’t what ends up happening, is it?

And you end your day feeling awful.

About yourself.

About your ability to decide ahead of time what you’ll drink and drink just that.

And above all…

About your ability to change.

Listen, you’re gonna want to argue with me on this one…

But I’m going to give it to you straight.

In the moment when you think the thought “I need (or deserve) a drink”…

You don’t.

You WANT a drink.

But you don’t NEED one.

All I’m saying is when your brain tells you that you need a drink you are seeking a distraction.

Because you’re feeling bored.
Because you’re feeling stressed.
Because you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Because you’re feeling pressured.
Because you’re feeling dread.

Stop giving in to the thought “I need (or deserve) a drink.”

You literally will not die in that exact moment if you don’t take one.

And “deserving” isn’t a thing.

Deserving is a concept people invent to indulge in instant gratification.

To avoid temporary discomfort.
The discomfort of the craving.
The discomfort of not having the drink.

Tell yourself the truth.

Tell yourself “I want a drink.”

Be really honest with yourself about exactly why that is.

And see if you like your reasons.

You most likely won’t.

Because if the drink wasn’t planned ahead of time, your reason will always be to escape the discomfort of how you’re feeling right now.

The stress or the kids screaming or the restlessness or the frustration or boredom...

Don’t let yourself off the hook.

Commit to what you really deserve.

A life you’re obsessed with, a life that isn’t obsessed with alcohol.

I know how to create this.

I can help you create this.

Let’s talk. Let’s go!

PS: If you think you drink too much, but know total sobriety isn’t what you want and that AA isn’t for you, I can help. Think you don’t have an off switch? Think again! I’ll help you achieve moderation so you’re able to take it or leave it. I’m taking 1-1 clients right now. I have 2 spots open in March. Now is your time. Book your free call here.

Reader You have stacks of great reasons to cut back. You’ve listened to the podcasts. Downloaded the free guides. Read the quit lit books. Yet still you overdo it. Not every day at least, but too often for comfort. You’re never completely certain what’s going to happen. Whether you’ll stick to your drinking goals tonight. Or not. Trust in yourself is low. And doubt is high. You stop believing. So you stop trying. Stop making active choices. Stop being accountable. And stop doing the things...
